JCI Bauchi City and Alheri-YS Foundation Strengthen Cancer Awareness and Prevention

In commemoration of World Cancer Day, JCI Bauchi City, in collaboration with Alheri-YS Foundation, successfully hosted a One-Day Awareness Campaign, themed "Innovate for  Impact: Strengthening Cancer Awareness and Prevention for a Healthier Society." The event provided a vital platform to educate participants on cervical cancer awareness, early detection, and prevention strategies.

Welcoming participants, JCI Bauchi City President, Tajudeen Taiwo Akintunde, emphasized the importance of collective efforts in tackling cancer through education and preventive measures. “Cancer remains one of the greatest health challenges of our time, but through awareness and proactive screening, we can save countless lives,” he stated.

Public health specialist Joshua Morolayo highlighted that HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, stressing the importance of HPV vaccination for young girls aged 9-14 and regular Pap smear tests for early detection. Dr. Yakubu Ajang, a consultant on cancer and viruses, discussed innovative screening techniques, including liquid biopsies and AI-assisted imaging, which improve early diagnosis.

Participants engaged in discussions on symptoms, cost barriers, and the availability of free screening programs. Some notable attendees included JCIN Amb. Hauwa Musa, the 2025 JCI Nigeria NVP, Northeast D2; Prince Idris Zakari Aboki, 2015 President, JCI Bauch City, who emphasized the need for accessible medical care and community awareness programs; and Hauwa Musa, who advocated for improved hygiene practices to mitigate HPV risks.

Organizations like the Society for Family Health and Ibrahim Allus Mom Foundation were recognized for offering free cervical cancer screenings in Bauchi, which has further pledged to screen and vaccinate 100 women against cervical cancer in collaboration with JCI Bauchi City.

In closing, Akintunde expressed gratitude to all participants, speakers, and volunteers. "Today’s event has been a testament to the power of collaboration in the fight against cancer. Let us continue raising awareness and advocating for accessible screening and vaccination programs."

JCI Bauchi City and Alheri-YS Foundation remain committed to advancing cancer awareness and prevention across communities.
